DETROIT RADIO

Whenever I come home to Detroit, I marvel at how much “better” the radio stations are than in Boston. But over the past three and a half years I haven’t been able to put my finger on why.

I hear songs I like in both cities.

I get excited about the same songs in both places.

I love all kinds of music, but I listen to a lot of Classic Rock. Eighties Rock. Hair Band Rock. Yep, that’s me! Focusing on that genre, I’m happy to say that I think I was able to sort it out this time around!

There is more emotion, more connection to the music when I am in Detroit.

Its where, at 13, I realized I didn’t quite know what 38 Special was talking about in Hold on Loosely (I do now!). It’s where I “fell in love” with Mike Reno of Loverboy. It’s where Ozzy Osbourne scared me a little. It’s where I choreographed award-winning precision dance routines to Billy Squier, Queen and Pat Benatar.

Loverboy w heart

When I hear these artists in Detroit, those feelings are much more immediate, the past was here.

I still love these songs in Boston of course, but there is remoteness to them, a slight distance. They still feel great, but layered over a new life the past is even more far-off.

The experience of the music is…better in Detroit? Or just different in Boston?

Mom and I met Boston native Billy Squier. Royal Oak Music Theater, June 1991. Yes I had a perm. Yes I was sweaty.

  1. I KNEW Loverboy would be in here somewhere!!!
PS I’m heading to the EMU homecoming game tomorrow. I always have flashbacks to being out there and dancing!! Great times!

  2. Every concert I attend now I’m surprised when the artist yells out, “TAMPA!” It just doesn’t have the same umpf as, “DETROIT!!!” I find myself looking perplexed. There is absolutely nothing like music in Detroit.
